Archaeological Site & Museum of Palaipafos

The Archaeological Site of Palaipafos is located in the village of Kouklia. Palaipafos was one of the most important cities-kingdoms of Cyprus and the first Cypriot site to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. There are two versions concerning the establishment of Palaipafos. According to the first, Agapinoras, king of Tegea in the Peloponnese, founded the kingdom city on the way back from the Trojan War. Its ancient ruins date back to the 12th century BC, and remained a place of worship until the 3rd - 4th century AD. The museum, housed in a Medieval Agri-Pavilion, exhibits many interesting finds from the area and shows how the cult of the goddess of fertility evolved into the cult of Aphrodite, and the sugar refinery is also open to visitors.
